All these things I have to get better at doing for successful meditation are things I have to do for a happier life: notice thoughts or concerns without judgement, let any distractions just gently pass without judgement, gently bring myself back to focus on the present task, just accept and don't resist.

I bought access to Headspace for a year. $72 plus tax, but I dare say it's worth the expense.
I think I had my first benefit of meditation outside the actual time spent meditating today: I started unproductively ruminating on an anxiety-laden topic (as I am often wont to do), and I stopped myself, let it travel past me like the rest of my brain traffic, and brought my attention gently back to my breath.

I love this phrase Headspace guy uses again and again "bring your attention gently back to x". I have to approach my goals this way: Ate a bag of chocolate chip cookies? Don't berate myself for it, just bring my attention gently back to my eat less sugar goal. If that's what works best for meditation, that may be what works best for everything.

Such bliss. My 10 minute oasis in the morning.

I finished the beginner's streak on Headspace and now am trying a few other guided meditation apps. (It's $72 dollars for the year for Headspace to access all the items; I want to make sure the purchase is actually worth it before I commit.)

The second app I am trying is ok, but I enjoy the voice less and it has background music which I find a bit distracting. The biggest drawback, though, is that it has less than a third of the meditations that Headspace offers. I'm going to finish the 7 day starter course on it, and then I'm going to move on to the third app to see how that is.

The sitting by the highway and not jumping into every car that passes by metaphor is really working for me!

The 10 minute session today was WAY too short.
    I think that's a very good sign.

    Oh, my goodness.
I downloaded Headspace (free!) on my phone, and I can't believe it took me so long to start using a meditation app.

This app and the guided meditation makes much of the difficulty I have with meditating practically vanish:

    • I get a ping on my phone every day asking me if I have meditated yet, which is really useful.

    • The sessions (so far) are only 10 minutes long, which makes it less of a burden of the larger block of time I was trying to find, and more like a little pick-me-up break.

    • My monkey mind is much less likely to run havoc all over the place when I can focus on the guy's voice and do what he tells me to do

    • I've been struggling with being really judgy about my inability to stop monkey-minding during meditation. The guy on the app addresses that, making it easier for me to be less judgy about it and enjoy the effort of meditating more.

    • Every time he says "just let your attention gently return to the sound around you (or the sensation of your breathing), I do that, thus avoiding the wasted time of not even noticing that my mind was spiraling into distracted thinking like before.

I am so glad I started doing guided meditation!

Made another effort today. It wasn't a very productive session, but at least I put in the time.

I was very glad to spend 30 minutes meditating today, particularly since I've had difficulty with motivation for this lately. I have to keep reminding myself that there is no way to do this wrong.
I wonder if my resistance is due to pain avoidance? (physical and mental)

You can type any date in plain English like in 3 weeks or next month.
You can also type in recurring due date like every day, every week and every month.
