I focused on moving meditation today. Interesting. Hard to maintain focus for long, but a worthwhile endeavor.

When I am sitting still, I sense the things going on in my body. There's pain in my chest. Some kind of radiation is hitting my intestines, causing them to malfunction. I have no way of protecting myself from these frequencies/radiation.

Hurrah! I am making progress on this goal.

I've devoted most of my light box time to meditation now, which means I'm getting 15 or more minutes in almost every day.

It's not much easier yet, but I'll keep at it.

It is very helpful that I've been motivated to use my light box in the mornings this winter on a semi-consistent basis. I used to read or write in front of the light, but now I'm devoting the 15 minutes to a half hour of time to meditation instead. So I've been meditating at least 15 minutes a day an average of 3 or 4 times a week.

I just finished such a session, and I've been realizing a few things. On the one hand, meditation is extremely relaxing and pleasurable for me. In the quiet paying attention to my breath and body time, I notice just how much tension I hold in my body, how tight my muscles are, and how high I scrunch my shoulders. Then I can work on consciously releasing the tension, which is great.

On the other hand, this is hard on me emotionally. Not only does my mind have time to veer into all the things I've done wrong lately, and all the things I have to worry about later, but then I worry that I'm doing THIS wrong, too. I shouldn't be letting my mind ruminate on past or future, I should be in the moment. And I am horrible at being in the moment. I try to bring myself back to my breath, and think soothing affirmations, and that sometimes helps center me and bring me back to more relaxation, but not a whole lot. Hopefully, I'll get better with time at letting the negative thoughts and worries go, but right now, so little of my time meditating is actually meditating, it seems.

I am doing this because I want to change my brain. They say meditation can literally change your brain connections, making you less anxious and negative, and that's what I want. But right now, I am anxious and negative that I am doing it wrong, I will never be able to do it better, and so will never actually get to that hoped for brain changing. Which I intellectually understand is nothing more than a vicious cycle of anxiety and negativity, but there you are.

I'll keep trying, and I'll keep telling myself, "It's okay. There are no rules. All you have to do is sit." It's so difficult, though.

@aenea @rosewilder Yes, 100% keep at it. Although I am now out of the habit of it, when I really needed it and used it, I had exactly the same situation. I did it for a long time thinking I was doing it wrong that it would never work for me and my mind was too different, but when it eventually all clicked it was great. Both with medidation and deep diaphragm breathing.

I agree so much with your other comment that the breathing exercises can be heaven - completely euphoric and cleansing for your mind, replacing anxious thinking with positive replacements. I only use the breathing now when I need it, but want to use it more regularly. It's amazing how now I can use it on the way into work for example, even when driving and it can change my perspective and in turn even my day. Keep trying, even when you lose concentration, there is always the next day and the next and the next and one day it will click.

Sorry if sound preachy I just feel like I was in that zone too. This was my experience and I am so glad I perservered. Instead of thinking of 'failed attempts' think of yourself as building your stamina for it. Maybe one day you will only do a session you think of as a 3/10 or a 30% of the way there but its all a step in the right direction and is better than 0%.

@rosewilder Aw thanks Rose. I'm glad it had that effect and wasn't preachy. I just genuinely remember feeling that exact way and then at some point it clicking. My wife was hilarious though, her problem was staying awake. Within 20 seconds of me hitting play on a relaxation exercise mp3 she would be fast asleep.

PS how did you find the light box? Something I have always considered, especially for winter time in Scotland, but don't really know where to start.

@irishthistle79 I can't recommend a light box enough. It is so useful in the winter. I crave the sunlight, and this is a good substitute. I got my Sun Touch Plus Apollo light box over 15 years ago (!), so I don't know if they still make it, but mine has been well worth the money I paid for it, considering it has lasted this long.

Something I'm realizing.. What helps me the most is meditating on my morning commute, and on my evening commute home.
