Stay Awake, Dan Chaon-- Absolutely devoured this one. A haunting slipstream short story collection woven around a few key images and themes, incandescent and dreamlike and heartbreaking. A beautiful meditation on grief, death, and dying.

A Head Full of Ghosts, Paul Tremblay-- This was a banger little horror novel, and it's hard to believe a cis dude wrote two young girls this convincingly. I wish it had slowed down and taken a breath once in awhile, but still well done and super fun.

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, Anthony Marra-- I started this one a couple of times before finally finishing it. It was so good, but so sad. Also sweet and funny and thoughtful, but so sad. I kept stopping near the end so that nothing bad would happen to the characters I had grown to love.

The House of Velvet and Glass, Katherine Howe-- This one was a Valentine's Day bathtub read, and that's about what it's perfect for. The plot and characters aren't particularly spectacular, but it was lush with turn of the century details of taffeta ballgowns, gourmet delicacies, romantic waltzes, sinful opium dens. A nice light fluff of a historical romance.

The Fisherman, John Langan-- One of my new favorite authors, I think. This had an unusual format where most of the novel took place in a different time and with a different narrator than expected, and that took some getting used to. But god, the language was so gorgeous and the story was so terrifying and elegant and sad. I would give my left arm to write horror half this well.

I picked up a really cool printed kit and have been spending some lovely afternoons stitching and sipping tea and listening to music. I'm not particularly good at embroidery, but I really love doing it. This has been a great opportunity for me to let go of the idea that I need to be the best at something, or even any good at all, to just enjoy doing it for myself.

The Third Man, Carol Reed-- A classic very dimly remembered from my childhood and thoroughly enjoyed as an adult. Great wit, great acting, great use of space and shadows and the backdrop of post-war Vienna. The only thing I wasn't sold on was the zither.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Yorgos Lanthimos-- One of my favorite directors does it again. The alienation and remove in his long shots, the cinematography, his trademark flat stilted delivery, the almost unbearable dread tinged with black humor. An amazing retelling of a classic myth.

Nymphomaniac, Lars von Trier (Director's Cut):

Five and a half hours of my life I'm not getting back. Generally his films are ugly in such a gut-wrenching, important way that it's worth putting up with his background misogyny. This is just ugly for the sake of his misogyny front and center. Still beautifully shot, I'll give him that much.

Winter Song, Sara Bareilles & Ingrid Michaelson

This is my winter song to you

    The storm is coming soon

It rolls in from the sea

My voice; a beacon in the night

My words will be your light

    To carry you to me

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

They say that things just cannot grow

    Beneath the winter snow

Or so I have been told

    They say we're buried far

    Just like a distant star

    I simply cannot hold

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    This is my winter song

    December never felt so wrong

Cause you're not where you belong

    Inside my arms

I still believe in summer days

    The seasons always change

And life will find a way

Ill be your harvester of light

    And send it out tonight

    So we can start again

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    This is my winter song

    December never felt so wrong

Cause you're not where you belong

    Inside my arms

This is my winter song to you

    The storm is coming soon

It rolls in from the sea

My love a beacon in the night

My words will be your light

    To carry you to me

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Is love alive?

    Jardin d'hivre, Stacey Kent

I would like some green sun

    Laces and teapots

    Photos of seasides

    In my greenhouse

    I would like some light

    Like in New England

    I want change the atmopshere

    In my greenhouse

My flowered dress in November's rain

Your running hands, i can't wait any longer

Years go by, the tender times are so far away

    None can hear us

I woul like, from Fred Astère

    See a Latécoère again

I would like you to always like me

    In my greenhouse

I want to have lunch on the floor

    Like along the bright gulfs

    Kiss you eyes wide open

    In my greenhouse

I Will Follow You Into The Dark, Death Cab For Cutie

    Love of mine

    Someday you will die

    But I'll be close behind

I'll follow you into the dark

    No blinding light

Or tunnels, to gates of white

Just our hands clasped so tight

Waiting for the hint of a spark

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied

Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks

Then I will follow you into the dark

In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule

I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black

I held my tongue as she told me, "Son

Fear is the heart of love," so I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied

Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks

Then I will follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see

    From Bangkok to Calgary

And the soles of your shoes are all worn down

The time for sleep is now

    It's nothing to cry about

Cause we'll hold each other soon

    In the blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied

Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks

Then I will follow you into the dark

I will follow you into the dark

    Tribulation Hymn, Parker Millsap

It was just like the lightning
    That flashes East to West
    Just like an oncoming storm
It was just like a coffin
    The hollow in my chest
    Just like the bible
    Just like I'd been warned

    I was tending the garden
    Pulling up the weeds
    Trying to bear righteous fruit
    But a man's fertile soil
    Where satan sows his seed
He will plow up your garden
    And plant a poison root

    He came for my sister
    She walked the narrow trail
    She'd follow wherever he'd lead
    But I took the highway
    I faltered and I fell
    He came for my sister
But he did not come for me

Now I kneel at the altar
    A church of vacant pews
In the rafters a chorus of crows
    They sing like a hymnal
    Of rusted organ tunes
    They sing like the broken
    Heart of one who knows

    Take Me to Church, Hozier

    My lover's got humour

She's the giggle at a funeral

    Knows everybody's disapproval

    I should've worshipped her sooner

If the heavens ever did speak

    She's the last true mouthpiece

    Every Sunday's getting more bleak

    A fresh poison each week

    "We were born sick"

    You heard them say it

    My church offers no absolutes

She tells me "worship in the bedroom"

The only heaven I'll be sent to

Is when I'm alone with you

I was born sick, but I love it

    Command me to be well

    Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen

    Take me to church

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

    Offer me that deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

If I'm a pagan of the good times

    My lover's the sunlight

To keep the goddess on my side

    She demands a sacrifice

    Drain the whole sea

    Get something shiny

Something meaty for the main course

That's a fine looking high horse

What you got in the stable?

We've a lot of starving faithful

    That looks tasty

    That looks plenty

    This is hungry work

    Take me to church

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife

    Offer me my deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

No masters or kings when the ritual begins

There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin

In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene

    Only then I am human

    Only then I am clean

    Amen, Amen, Amen

    Take me to church

I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

    Offer me that deathless death

Good God, let me give you my life

Romance Sonámbulo, Federico García Lorca (Carlos Mantea translation)

Green, green I want you green:

Green the wind, green the branches.

    The ship upon the sea

and the horse in the mountain.

With the shadow at her waist

    She dreams in her veranda,

green the flesh, green the hair,

and her eyes of cold silver.

    Under the gypsy moon

    They are watching her

    and she cannot see them.

Green, green, I want you green:

    Great stars of frost

    come with shadows of fish

that open the way of the dawn.

    The figtree caresses the wind

    with its rasping branches,

and the grass, a thieving cat,

    bristles at its sour chords.

But who will come? And from where?

    She lingers in her veranda

green the flesh, green the hair,

    dreaming the bitter sea.

    Friend, I want to exchange

    my horse for your house,

    my saddle for your mirror

    my knife for your blanket.

    Friend, I come bloody

    from the gates of Cabra."

    "If I could, my son,

    I'd do this trade.

But I am no longer myself,

nor is my house my house."

    "Friend, I want to die

    decently, in my own bed.

    bravely, if it's possible,

in the soft sheets of Holland.

Can't you see the wound I have

from my chest to my throat?"

    "You bear three hundred

Dark roses on your white chest

    Around your sash, the blood

    oozes, smells so powerfully."

    "But now I'm not myself,

and my house is not my house.

At least let me go up

    to the high veranda

Let me go! Let me me go up

    to the green veranda,

    where the water echoes

on the balustrades of the moon.

Now the two friends go up

    to the high verandas.

    Leaving a trail of blood.

    Leaving a trail of tears.

    Little lights of pane

    Shook the tile roof.

    A thousand crystal tambourines

    wounded the dawn.

Green, green, I want you green:

green the wind, green the branches

    The two friends went up

    The great wind left

    a strange taste of gall,

    of mint, of sweet basil.

Friend! Where is she? Tell me.

    Where's the girl of bitterness?

    How many times

    will she wait for you

    on this green veranda

    with her young face,

    and her black hair.

Under the lip of the well

    the gypsy rocked.

Green the flesh, green the hair,

and her eyes of cold silver.

    She floats on the water

    an icicle of the moon.

    The night became as secret

    As a little plaza.

    Drunken civil guards

    were beating on the portals.

Green, green I want you green.

Green the wind, green the branches.

    The ship upon the sea.

And the horse in the mountains.

Do not go gentle into that good night, Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night.

    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,

Because their words had forked no lightning they

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright

Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight

And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight

Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,

Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

    Alone, Edgar Allan Poe

From childhood’s hour I have not been

As others were—I have not seen

As others saw—I could not bring

My passions from a common spring—

From the same source I have not taken

    My sorrow—I could not awaken

My heart to joy at the same tone—

    And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone—

    Then—in my childhood—in the dawn

Of a most stormy life—was drawn

From ev’ry depth of good and ill

The mystery which binds me still—

From the torrent, or the fountain—

From the red cliff of the mountain—

From the sun that ’round me roll’d

In its autumn tint of gold—

From the lightning in the sky

As it pass’d me flying by—

From the thunder, and the storm—

And the cloud that took the form

(When the rest of Heaven was blue)

Of a demon in my view—

Cassilda's Song (from The King in Yellow), Robert W. Chambers

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink beneath the lake,
    The shadows lengthen
    In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
    But stranger still is
    Lost Carcosa.

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
    Must die unheard in
    Dim Carcosa.

    Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
    Shall dry and die in
    Lost Carcosa.

Read a classic romance novel-- Romance isn't really my genre most of the time, so I figured a classic romance was not going to happen and went with just a romance novel instead. The House of Velvet & Glass was not my usual read at all, but very light and fun. I liked how much detail there was about the dresses, the balls, the settings. Very lush.

Read a book of short stories-- Done, and loved it. It was great having an anthology that ranged from serious to silly to scary to surreal, and very diverse. And it was great remembering how good short stories are to have for bus stops, waiting rooms, anytime you need to be able to pick it up and put it right back down.

Read a book you can finish in one day-- I actually managed two novellas in one evening, an 84 page book of horror flash fiction and a 99 page novella. One was pretty good and the other very disappointing, but it was satisfying to finish both in an evening. And good for my 2017 GoodReads challenge!

A Wrinkle In Time, Ava DuVernay-- This was such a colossally important book to both me and Meg that we're still processing allll the feels over it. It was not my personal Wrinkle in Time, but I can clearly see how it was DuVernay's personal Wrinkle in Time, and I think it's a very important one for a generation of marginalized colors. Glad she got it right. The kids did an amazing job. The costumes in particular were incredible.

Black Panther, Ryan Coogler-- Absolutely perfect. Everything fun about a Marvel movie but so far removed from the toxic white male fanboy culture. The afrofuturism. The culture. The costumes. The architecture. The politics. The strong womanism. The reinvented soundtrack. The hotness. Gahhhhh it was just so goooood.

The Duke of Burgundy, Peter Strickland-- The eternal struggle: "This movie has lesbians in it but it is by a man." This was a surprisingly good offering despite that, framed very conscious of the male gaze. A solid exploration of the dynamics and banalities of kink and how feminine stereotypes play into romantic roles, somehow simultaneously lush and cold in Strickland's gorgeous retro style. Bonus points for having a faux perfume credit.

I thought for a long time that I had to do a bunch of learning about different spices and techniques and complicated stuff, but it turns out all I needed to do was get my ass in the kitchen. Every recipe, even the simplest most basic ones, taught me something that would have been overwhelming trying to learn it from a book or in a course. It all comes gradually.

Beautea Studio's Green Earl Grey-- Green tea is definitely too delicate to support a flavor as strong as bergamot.

Reading Room's Nikki Teavonni-- I love this company's literary themes. This one was a vanilla and lotus blossom blend, but I really only tasted the vanilla and it had a bit of an oily feel to it. Sad day.

Stash's Double Bergamot Earl Grey-- I was a little worried this one would be overpowering, but it was just strong enough. Complex and full-bodied, nice and heavy.

Tazo's Zen-- This was a really nice balance between the malt notes of their green tea and the brighter, cleaner flavors of lemon and spearmint. I think this one will be a good way for me to drink more green tea.

Since I've started tracking my eating with Fitbit, I learned a major hurdle in this I wasn't even aware of-- I'm not getting anywhere near the calories I thought I was through the day, and nowhere near enough protein. I was shocked. But it explains my insatiable evening cravings, especially on workout days. I increased my healthy food during the day and maximized my protein intake at dinner the past week and the difference was tremendous. I never expected the key to curbing my overindulgence was to eat MORE.

This does not come naturally to me, for a variety of reasons. But I'm enjoying it more than I expected to. The biggest help so far has been drinking water in between each bites, which forces me to slow down.

Horror-- Ever since I was a little kid and it was completely forbidden, adding to the thrill every time I got to sneak some home. I love horror. I love being scared. I love old school ghost stories and retro monster movies and modern slasher stuff. I love my old 80s black paperbacks. It's not something you can really explain to someone who isn't into it. It's just plain fun.

Cooking-- I love how sensory it is, the sound of things steaming and sizzling and chopping, the colors of fresh ingredients, the feel of them under my hands, the look of the ingredients being transformed, and of course the taste. I love unwinding with Ella Fitzgerald on and my cute apron on and a glass of wine or beer in my hand while I cook.
